Unicorn Quotes

As there are so very many things written about unicorns, I could have put in a lot more quotes. These, however, are my personal favorites and they really struck my fancy. I felt they were suitably imaginative and could stand alone, so to speak. Some were contributed by readers, many were acquired from databases and even from those old-fashioned things called "books". This collection of quotes represents quite some time in the making. It can take a very long time to pursue unicorns, you know.....

God himself must needs be traduced, if there is no unicorn in the world.
-- Edward Topsell
Jill had, as you might say, quite fallen in love with the Unicorn. She thought -- and she wasn't far wrong -- that he was the shiningest, delicatest, most graceful animal she had ever met: and he was so gentle and soft of speech that, if you hadn't known, you would hardly have believed how fierce and terrible he could be in battle.
-- C. S. Lewis, The Last Battle
"The question of historicity and actuality with regard to gods and unicorns is a relatively trifling matter which may be left to antiquarians and biologists, for both the god and the unicorn had a business to perform greater than any mere existence in the flesh could explain or provide a basis for."
-- Odell Shepard, The Lore of the Unicorn
Now I will believe that there are unicorns...
-- William Shakespeare, The Tempest
A wise man never plays leapfrog with a unicorn.
-- Tibetan proverb
What are the four Intelligent Creatures?
The unicorn, the phoenix, the tortoise, and the dragon.
-- Traditional Chinese Saying
Some things you have to believe to see

I'm sorry, but a unicorn doesn't work like a mule.

And now, one of my personal favorite bits of wisdom:

Never headbutt a unicorn.

Note that this is also seen as: Never play leapfrog with a unicorn, a variation on the proverb given above. I just happen to prefer the headbutt image for my own stubborn reasons. Also I was sent another variation on the above, which I like even more:

Never turn your back
on a Unicorn that doesn't like you.
