There would be no water or power - and NO CABLE! I've yet to hear an apology, public or private, from a single one of those Y2K alarmists admitting their 'Chicken Little' mistakes. A song lyric that just struck me...
Thu, 07 Jun 07

I left you far behind, the ruins of the life that you had in mind
And though you still can't see, I know your mind's made up
You're gonna cause more misery

Do what you want to do and go where you're going to
Think for yourself 'cause I won't be there with you

On loving perfume...
Mon, 13 Feb 06

"Another wonderful advantage of this love affair with perfume is you don't have to be faithful to just one, even if you adore each other to death. In perfume, you can cheat very discreetly over and over again, by taking up with another lover, or two, three, four, ten -- a whole string of beloveds if you like!" - John Oakes

A couple new quotations
Fri, 04 Nov 05

Rarely do we find men who willingly engage in hard, solid thinking. There is an
almost universal quest for easy answers and half-baked solutions. Nothing pains some people more
than having to think.

Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and
conscientious stupidity.

Two new quotes
Thu, 03 Jun 04

Just added these to the random quote generator (incidentally, one of these days I'm going to get Andrew to write me a little script to take all those quotes and put them on one page so people can read them all in one go, but since I don't want it to be dynamic and since he's been horribly busy for ages, it's not done yet).

"It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument." - William McAdoo

Found it...
Sun, 16 Nov 03

This is one of my all-time favorite quotes/exhanges. It's from a Star Trek film (I'm not a Trekkie or a Trekker, but I've been watching Star Trek since I was a little child, when it was on the first time, and one of my earliest memories is of sitting on the floor in my pyjamas watching Mr. Spock on telelvision). The concept pretty much sums up one of my greatest beliefs:

Spock: You must have faith.
Savvik: Faith?
Spock: That the universe will unfold as it should.

I really, really, truly, profoundly, and in all other ways genuinely believe that the universe unfolds as it should. Bad stuff, good stuff, all stuff. Some of it sucks, some of it is incomprehensible, some of it is wonderful, but while I'm not especially fatalistic (i.e., I DO believe people can change things, and that sometimes those things have a ripple effect), I do believe that in the long run, it all works out the way it ought to. Simplistic, maybe, but I believe it.

The other thing I really, really, truly believe is that we get back what we give out and that we reap what we sow. Maybe not immediately, maybe not in ways that we even realize, but I truly believe it happens. This is a nearly universal concept in the religions and philosophies of the world, so I figure it resonates with an awful lot of people. It certainly does with me.

And now I have that Savage Garden song stuck in my head....

I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love until you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye...

SMS and ICQ
Fri, 10 Oct 03

I reinstalled ICQ after ages of not having it. I like the lastest version. It's got some cool features. The coolest I've found so far is that I can send an SMS message via ICQ. I HATE having to type via the keypad on my phone, so I hardly ever send SMS messages, but hey, if I can type...

I think you prolly need to know my mobile number if you want to SMS me via ICQ, but if you have my ICQ number and you want to try, feel free. And, hey, if you have my ICQ number, you can ask for the mobile number if you really want it. The people on my ICQ list are all trusted by be so I know you're not going to call me up and telemarket or anything.

And speaking of mobile phones, I changed my ringtone (oooooohhh). I used to have Walzing Matilda, but I got really tired of it. So I had a look and changed it to the opening bars of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, the chamber music (or is it a concerto?) by Mozart. You know the one. It goes... dum da dum da dum da dum da dum...

Political Exchange

Saw this in a forum and found it amusing. Naturally, it was a political discussion:

Person A: Blind faith leads to too much trouble down the road.

Person B:Right. This from a guy who still believes in "Weapons of Mass Destruction"!

Two new quotes
Fri, 29 Aug 03

These have already been added to the random quote generator thingy. One of these days I'll get Andrew to write me a little script that will spew out the quotes all in one big page so people can read them all in one go if they want to. It is a 25Kb text file, though, so it's an awful lot of quotes.

Anyway, both of these are by Picasso, an artist whose work I appreciate but don't really like all that much for various reasons (yes, it's possible to appreciate things you don't like, and if you don't believe that, just go study art for a few years and you'll eventually be able to do it because theyll drill it into your head, heh).

"Every child is an artist, the problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." - Pablo Picasso

"My mother said to me, 'If you become a soldier, you'll be a general; if you become a monk, you'll end up as the pope.' Instead, I became a painter and wound up as Picasso." - Pablo Picasso
